Are you a Southerner or a Yankee?

I say this as a true southern woman: But I have now lived half of my life in the Midwest and Northeast and can say without hesitation that most non-southerners have firmly held ideas about what a Southern Woman is and isn’t. Call it a myth, a stereotype, call it an archetype, but despite the fact that southern women are as diverse as the population of the United States, the image of a Southern Woman persists in the popular imagination. The thing is, the South is not a monolithic cultural landscape. I was born to a Cajun father and a Creole mother whose ideas about how to raise a girl were different enough that they might as well have come from different planets. It’s not just accents in New Orleans that are utterly different from those in nearby Baton Rouge or Ville Platte, but expectations for women. Similarly, women born and bred in Dallas or Mobile may have little in common with those raised in the lower Rio Grande or Miami. Women raised in rural or urban poverty in the South may have more in common with women raised in such poverty in the Midwest. Conservative Protestant women from rural Alabama or Mississippi will have utterly different expectations of womanhood than those raised by liberal Catholics, say, from urban areas. But stereotypes that take hold in the popular imagination are difficult to root out, often because, in this case, there are some southern women who play to the stereotype.

These services, especially in the late 19th century and early 20th century, were the flagship of the passenger network and received the newest and best motive power and rolling stock. In the mid 20th century these expresses were augmented by evening railcars between Christchurch and Dunedin. Mail was carried as well as passengers, and the process of delivering and receiving mail at stations during the journey would often delay the express.

For this reason, when locomotive drivers hit the relatively flat, straight track of the Canterbury Plains approaching Christchurch, they would seek to run as fast as possible and try to make up as much lost time as they could.

So, this collection is as much a historical document as one about language and accents. The important thing to remember as you laugh at these entries is that they represent perfectly good English. Sorry, teachers, I know this hurts, but these expressions represent nothing but a regional dialect.

It’s just one of those low-key local bars where you go to enjoy a drink with friends, but the clientele is all gay men.

The drama and decadence of the gay nightlife scene are lost on this crowd. But then I notice the all-too-familiar hums of gossip coming from the corner. Their whispers and stares fail to attain a level of subtlety. It’s a feeling burned into my brain after growing up in the Bible-bound closet of a Southern red state. And although it’s not uncommon for gay guys to judge each other, this time is different.

Their gossip is aimed at the interracial couple who just walked through the door. Racism is a hot-button issue that is widely frowned upon, even in the Deep South. But the social codes in this area still hold a veiled standard of “separate but equal.
