Destiny: The Taken King review for PS4, Xbox One
By Brendan Graeber It feels as if the paint had just begun to dry on Splatoon after its release on the Wii U in when Nintendo applied a fresh coat and relaunched it with Splatoon 2 on the Switch. That may be why this sequel feels less like a whole new game than a new version of the first one that rolls up the best post-launch updates to the colorful and adorably non-violent team-based shooter and adds some new toys.
And despite some questionable choices that can leave you trapped in matchmaking purgatory, the addition of a standout and clever take on a co-op horde mode provides some seriously addicting fun that has me coming back for more.

Destiny – The Collection contains every release from the award-winning first-person shooter franchise to date. It’s a great way for Guardians to embark on journeys they may have missed, as well as a perfect starting point for new players who want to join the Destiny community.
The most interesting thing about it might be how seemingly little developer Bungie has tried to differentiate the experience from Halo an incredibly popular game originally developed by Bungie. That might sound like a criticism, but the fact is that lots of people loved Halo and it makes sense for Bungie to stick to what they know they can do well.
Where Borderlands goes for pure cartoony fun, Destiny is all surreal sci-fi realism. With missions set on Earth, the Moon, Mars, Venus, and more, the game offers environments that are unfailingly impressive. The concept art for this game is stunning. Destiny sure is pretty.

As of April , you will earn 90 Crucible Reputation per match, plus some additional reputation for winning. If that sounds like a lot, believe me, it’s not – this trophy used to require a max of public matches. Earn the highest tier of completion in 10 public events. Public Events are on a set timer. When they activate, all players in the region will get a notification about the event, their Ghost will say something about it, and a blue icon will appear on the HUD leading to the event location.
In order to earn this trophy, you have to earn a Gold rating in 10 Public Events, which basically means completing them fully. This depends on the specific objective of the event. If it’s a Kill the Target event, for example, you’ll get the Gold rating if you successfully kill the target. Assist in capturing 50 capture points in Control. Each team must try to take control of points on the map, because the more points your team controls, the more each kill on enemy players is worth. This trophy wants you to assist in capturing 50 points.
This is cumulative, so if you capture a point in a match, and it gets captured by the other team, and then you capture it again, that’ll count as 2 total points for the trophy. However, be advised that neutralizing a point does not count; it has to be a complete capture for your team.

Farpoint is the first game to use the controller, which was unveiled at E3 last year. Publisher Sony announced a co-op mode at GDC, and staged a press demo at a media event yesterday, allowing two players to stand virtually side-by-side as we worked our way through waves of alien attackers. The Aim Controller presents as an assault gun, that can be swapped out into new weapons, including space-age shotguns and sniper rifles. I played on a planet that had a Star Trek-ish look about it featuring lots of boulders punctuated by open combat spaces.
There were also ledges from which attackers fired down upon us. Using the rocks as cover, my partner and I tried to cope with increasingly menacing waves of enemies. The controller’s thumbstick offered easy movement, while a virtual gun sight helped me take out bad guys, as well as the projectiles they were lobbing our way. Farpoint Sony When things got hairy, I took one too many hits and went down. Fortunately, my partner was able to revive me and we continued in the splatterfest.
I’ve finished Halo 5, the lack of split-screen co-op is still a crime
Tom Clancy’s The Division Destiny 2 and The Division are two very different games with the same core gameplay principle. Both are multiplayer shooters that allow players to team up against AI-controlled enemies, and both heavily involve grinding for loot. Comparing Destiny 2 and The Division is tough. I think I’m going to stop buying games that do this, or at least give them a proper call-out when I see it. Destiny pulled this with the way they designed raids without having a matchmaking service. The Monster Hunter clones on the Vita did this with a couple bosses too. And now I’m seeing Monster Hunter: World do a lot of this.
Last night I fought a boss in single player mode that felt rigged from the beginning. Despite this, I was kicking his ass and evading at all the right times. I had him limping on his last legs and kept hitting hard, but he wouldn’t go down and the fight kept going for an oddly long time. He knocked me out a couple times in quick succession, then finally I got put in an unavoidable stun and he killed me in one shot.
That really pissed me off.

With the live stream event for Destiny 2 today, Bungie has revealed several other details including matchmaking for challenges called “Guided Games”.
Bungie But in most aspects, the studio has changed almost as much as Destiny itself. After 10 years working on Halo , Bungie had to teach itself how to make a massively multiplayer game from scratch. What would we want to do if we were to reinvent the Bungie shooter? And what did we want to hold on to that was super important to us? Bungie has got a history of doing games that allow players to play together.
We really wanted to lean into that very heavily with Destiny, and knew that that would create more opportunities for players to play together. On launch, the game was an odd mix of the extremely polished action that Bungie had developed a reputation for throughout its years on Halo, tied together with an overarching plot which, to put it kindly, made no sense.
In October , gaming site Kotaku revealed that the game felt that way because it had been substantially rewritten in the run-up to launch. By the launch of The Taken King, the third expansion pack for Destiny, which came out in September , that flexibility was being used to offer alternative versions of missions, one-off challenges and special quest chains which could be played at multiple points in the story.
Talk about Bungie games for any length of time and someone will bring up the skyboxes — the vast, gorgeous scenery that sits on the edge of the game world, showing the rings of Halo curving up to infinity, or the towering spires of the Vex infestation on Venus rising out of the earth.
